Hi!

LG,
Ric

They made type errors and should be stigmosa and raja. I wrote a large summary of all the new species plus photos, hopefully it's in the next Makropode. If you want to know more please put down your questions here; I'll be more than happy to answer them!

Oh and rubra is ressurected as a valid species belonging to the foerschi group 🙂

Hi Stefan!

Glad to see you here - i'm pretty surprised about such a lot of new species in such a short period of time.
Maybe you can tell me something about Betta stiktos - is it as similar to splendens as imbellis is, or are there more differences between this new species and the former splendens-typed fish?
How does it look like? Are there already photos available on the net?

Longing for answers ;),
Ric

Some of the new species have been waiting for years. Probably they decided to do a lot of species in two papers at once, thus easier. Stiktos. A very interesting one if you ask me! It looks like the actual wild splendens only it has dots on its dorsal fin; black transverse bars on the caudal fin. They come from Cambodia, the Mekong drainage. There's very, very little known about this species. Perhaps someone here has collected them in the past? No live photos available (looking myself too), yet....

Gladiator interests me as Tan & Ng couldn't keep two specimens together as they were always fighting heavily. So far no live photos of:

cracens
stiktos
obscura
pallifina (description shows a photo of live fish on a plate, not in the water so colours are different)
rubra

And also none of aurigans (from a different paper). So if anyone has photos of one or more of these species.... 🙂

I have photos of all the rest in my new paper except pallifina and gladiator. For more/other photos you can check on the Petfrd forum.

Raja is interesting as well: the paper says 99 % of all fusca we have is raja and that live fusca hasn't been collected for a long, long time and is curently only known from the type series.

Some photos:

Betta raja

Betta stigmosa

Betta lehi

So long!

Hi Klaus, thank you very much! I won't translate anymore. Norbert wrote me how terrible the translator German was and said I could write in English haha! He was right. :)

Please don't apologise for your English; it's not bad at all. Please do feel free to write in German; I understand most of it.

As long as we're talking about new species: someone is describing sp. Mahachai right now :) And with any luck, someone will work on the foeschi group; I think a lot of new species will be named for that group. But that's just a guess; I haven't heard anyone actually working on them (which doesn't mean no noe is....).

It should be stigmosa (spelled wrong in Juilian's list). Also from the splendens group stiktos is missing in the list :) Haven't imported any of the new species, some might be possible but I don't have the space right now for more. Though all Sumatran fusca are raja so there's a new species all around us already. Don't know what those from Banka are though....they're not supposed to be fusca....
