Has anyone ever seen them? Schindler (2009) argues that:

"When reviewing the available data. And without further evidence, it could very well be that in the case of M. phongnhaensis it concerns a synonym for M. erythropterus (=M. spechti, see below) and in M. baviensis for M. opercularis."*

*News on the taxonomy and distribution of Macropodus species, Der Makropode – 31. Jahrgang – 1 / 2009

I have this article if anyone's interested.

Hi Stefan,

I don't think that these species are valid.
If you don't have it, I can send you a copy of the original paper in vietnamese language.

Regards
Thomas

That would be most welcome, Thomas - thank you. Do you have my Email address? If not I'll PM it to you.

Why do you think they are invalid taxa?

Hi Stefan,

I can not send you an email through the forum, so please send me an PM with your mail adress.

When you see the pictures in the paper, you will see that the fishes look like lousy conserved opercularis or spechti. :-)
And the meristemic data (the only thing you can read if you don't understand vietnamese) is also not very convincing.

Regards
Thomas
