This phenotype has been referred to as Southern Type. But this has proven to be incorrect, because they have been found in northern Vietnam (in the geographical sense), north of the Ocean Cloud Pass (Hai Van Pass). Furthermore, the distribution of phenotypes seems to be more complex. Thus, the different forms will be distinguished by their most prominent trait, the tail fin of males. To avoid confusion with the Betta splendens domestic variety "crowntail" or the Ceylonese combtail Belontia signata and the Malay combtail Belontia hasselti, the more flamboyant tail fin is referred to as "brushtail", the forked one as "forktail".
