The "pi" mark is more prominent in female due to lighter body colouration (very faint in male).
I agree the caudal fin may look different but the fishes came not from Thailand as most of the available Betta pi, but the are from Malaysia. It would be expected if the 2 population show some morphological differences.
In fact I did send some specimens to a university for confirmation (in 2004) and the scientist there concur about the identification (ie Betta pi).

Zahar, their caudal fin does not different from the Thai fish I had, actually.
hello,
where you have collected the fishes exactly? the caudal-fin appears me somewhat too long taken off and pointedly. I have b.pi from sungai golok for a longer time, and so roughly 150 young-fishes and i never see such caudal-fin in b.pi. also here are missing to characteristic marble marks on the top of the head (like the photo from me) in this variant, is it correct? Which size the fishes have?

I see.
BTW the fishes were collected in Terengganu (Malaysia), that is abut 200 km south of Sg Golok.
The spot on the head is not as prominent as your photo or Torben's. The body shape (especially in male) is also noticibly slimmer. Either because of locality difference or because of the tank condition. I notice you tank is brighter with light colour substrate (mine darker with black sand).
At the moment the male is roughly 10 cm TL.

Zahar, I checked the photos of mine and I was a bit off; yours indeed seem to have more elongate/spaded caudals.
Can we see the photo for comparison?

I'll upload one tomorrow. Don't have many good male photos; too scared.
Very poor photo but you can at least the caudal of this brooding male.
